Geoengineering Enviroment and Mining

The Association Georisorse e Ambiente, founded in 1964 for cultural and non-profit purposes, operates in the field of environmental and mining geo-engineering, with particular reference to fluid, solid and territorial georisources, interference and compatibility and environmental safety of the activities production, excavation and construction.

The Associazione Georisorse e Ambiente is active throughout the national territory and has close links with numerous foreign related associations. The Association organizes International and National Conferences on various technical, economic, legal and environmental issues related to the following main cultural sectors:

ABSTRACT

The intervention has the objective to illustrate what are the most suitable types instrumental to monitor the bolts.

Before entering into the details of the measurement systems, we need to frame the monitoring concept, its usefulness and the methods through which the instruments are chosen.

At the center of the presentation are subsequently the measurement systems for bolts, in response to measurement and monitoring needs in the geotechnical field, rock mechanics and verification of soil-structure interaction. The focus will be in particular on two measurement systems: load cells and instrumented bolts, both designed to allow measurements to be carried out easily and reliably.

Each type of instrument will be analyzed in its features, applications and potential:

• The load cells are made up of a steel body, sensitized with a certain number of strain-gauges so as not to be affected by the eccentricity of the acting loads. Under load the toroidal cell undergoes a deformation that is detected by the strain gauges, generating an electrical signal at the output proportional to the applied load.

• The bolts instrumented with the vibrating wire strain gauges allow to measure the extent of the deformations. From the knowledge of the characteristic parameters of the materials (module E) and the geometric dimensions (area or section A) it is possible to determine the voltages or the acting loads.

Through the analysis of the characteristics of the instruments, environmental context conditions and some concrete application cases, the presentation highlights the main quality and reliability requirements of the monitoring tools.
