CHALLENGE: Overcoming the Limitations of Existing Monitoring Systems

Uzbekistan has launched an ambitious national initiative to upgrade and modernize the monitoring systems across its critical hydroelectric dam infrastructure. As a cornerstone of this program, the Tupalang Dam project presented a classic engineering challenge: a large-scale, operational asset with older, existing instrumentation that still relied entirely on manual data collection.
Before the intervention, data acquisition was a time-consuming and labor-intensive process, introducing a high risk of human error during manual transcription. More importantly, manual readings made it impossible to achieve real-time data visualization.
The primary objective was not only to deploy new, advanced sensors but also to carefully evaluate the condition of the pre-existing instrumentation, verify measurement quality, and seamlessly automate the entire network. Bridging the gap between decades-old existing sensors and modern digital dataloggers was a complex technical hurdle, requiring a solution flexible enough to handle diverse communication protocols without disrupting ongoing dam operations.

SOLUTION: A Scalable Mix of Automation, Wireless, and existing sensors Integration

To meet the client’s demanding requirements, Sisgeo deployed an integrated architecture combining high-capacity dataloggers, wireless networks, and portable verification tools. The turnkey hardware supply included:

Core Automation: 5 Omnialog Dataloggers paired with 21 Multiplexers to completely automate both the newly installed instruments and the existing sensor in the infrastructure.

Wireless Open-Air Network: 44 Wireless Communication Nodes deployed around the reservoir perimeter. This solution highlights how wireless communication is increasingly proving its value in dam environments, successfully covering expansive open-air areas and rugged terrain where physical cabling is impractical or cost-prohibitive.

Hydraulic and Pressure Monitoring: 31 Vibrating Wire Piezometers along with 25 Vibrating Wire Piezometers specifically configured for three-way fittings to monitor uplift pressure.

Atmospheric Compensation: 8 Relative Pressure Transducers designed to measure the water table accurately by isolating and eliminating the influence of atmospheric pressure fluctuations.

Seepage Automation: 10 Automatic V-Notch Flow Meters installed to continuously track and monitor real-time seepage through the dam body.

• Existing sensors Validation: 2 Mind Portable Readouts utilized specifically to perform manual cross-checks and rigorously verify the quality and stability of the vibrating wire instruments installed years prior during the dam’s original construction.
Local Empowerment & Collaborative Installation
A key factor in the project’s swift execution was the technical synergy between companies. Engineers from Gidrotechmonitoring LLC traveled to Italy for intensive technical training at Sisgeo’s headquarters. Empowered by this knowledge transfer, the local team executed the on-site installation rapidly, under the expert supervision and field visits of Sisgeo’s technical specialists.
Data Integrity and Integration
Given the highly sensitive and critical nature of dam safety data, the entire data management ecosystem is securely hosted by Gidrotechmonitoring LLC. They utilized their own proprietary software, custom-developed for this multi-dam modernization initiative. The Sisgeo Omnialog system demonstrated seamless compatibility, transmitting reliable data directly into the client’s software platform without requiring third-party middleware.

OUTCOME: Real-Time Insights and Operational Efficiency

The transition from manual readings to Sisgeo’s automated ecosystem has completely transformed operational efficiency at Tupalang Dam.

Elimination of Manual Latency: The implementation of Omnialog automation has drastically reduced data collection times and eliminated transcription errors, allowing staff to focus on high-value data analysis rather than manual gathering.

Immediate Risk Mitigation: With real-time data streaming from the automatic V-Notch meters and vibrating wire piezometers, the client can instantly detect hydraulic behavioral shifts, ensuring immediate identification of any anomalies in seepage or uplift pressure.

Asset Life Extension: By utilizing the Mind portable readouts, Sisgeo successfully validated and rehabilitated the historical sensors. The data proved that the decades-old instruments were still performing reliably, saving the client massive capital expenditures that would have been required to replace them.
By proving that historical dam infrastructure can be cost-effectively retrofitted with real-time digital monitoring, Sisgeo and Gidrotechmonitoring LLC have established a benchmark model for the rest of Uzbekistan’s national modernization program.
