Setzungspegel werden in Dämmen und Auffüllungen eingesetzt um Setzungen und Geländehebungen zwischen dem Setzungspegel Endpunkt und dem Messkopf zu messen.
Setzungspegel, sie werden auch als Tell-Tale Extensometer bezeichnet, bestehen im Wesentlichen aus einer Fussplatte auf welche in einem Hüllrohr geschützte Messgestänge sukzessiv mit dem Auf- oder Abbau der Schüttung verlängert oder gekürzt werden. Setzungspegel können auch in einem Bohrloch mittels Zementation eingesetzt und verankert werden.
Mittels geodätischen Messungen (Nivellements oder tachymetrische Messungen) werden die Setzungen und Hebungen ermittelt. Bei Verwendung eines Wegaufnehmers können die Messungen auch ohne den Einsatz einer Vermessungsequipe manuell oder automatisch erfolgen.

A regulated DC voltage is applied to the two ends of the resistance strip: the voltage between one end of the strip and the contact point of wiper and strip is measured as the output signal.
Sisgeo instruments that utilize linear the linear potentiometer technology have often a 4-20mA output because electrical (Ampere) signals are more suitable for long distance transmission than tension (Volt) signal.
