Urban regeneration: Former Municipal Theatre of Florence





The project to convert the former Municipal Theatre in Florence between Via Solferino, Via Magenta and Corso Italia involves its almost complete demolition and the construction of 160 flats, shops, a gymnasium and an underground car park. This is the most important urban regeneration project in the centre of Florence, which should redevelop an entire block in a contemporary key. In addition to confirming the predominantly residential use of the complex, the plan envisages an open space inside the block and the realisation of redevelopment works in the context, such as the redevelopment of the central parterre of Via Solferino. The renovation project includes the demolition of the theatre hall and the realisation of ancillary and functional works for the modernisation of the museum.

AIDA IoT is used for the comprehensive data management of an extensive structural and vibration monitoring system. The purpose of the automated system is to check the stability of buildings in the vicinity of the construction site during excavation and construction, to verify the effectiveness of retaining/foundation works during excavation, and to monitor the effects of vibrations caused by construction work on the buildings in the vicinity.

Specifically, piezometers, load cells and biaxial clinometers were installed. This instrumentation was cabled to wireless nodes that communicate with a data collection and transmission gateway. In addition, a number of vibrometric survey stations and two robotic total stations were installed for the topographical control of significant points of the construction site area. The fully automated monitoring system, managed through the AIDA IoT web platform, allowed the designers and the Works Management to control the monitored parameters in real time during the progress of the operations, guaranteeing safety especially during the most delicate tasks. Thanks to AIDA IoT, real-time access to data and alerts in case of critical issues were guaranteed. The end result was faster and safer intervention by the technical staff involved.
