What is heritage monitoring?
Heritage geotechnical and structural monitoring is the process of continuously monitoring structures such as historical buildings, monuments, and archaeological sites.
Geotechnical monitoring involves monitoring the behaviour of the soil or rock surrounding the structure, while structural monitoring involves measuring the behaviour of the structure itself. This information can help identify any potential hazards or issues with the structure, allowing for early detection and prevention of damage.
Heritage monitoring typically involves the use of sensors such as inclinometers, tilt meters, crack meters, strain gauges, and settlement gauges, which measure inclinations, movement, deformation, and vibrations of the structure and surrounding soil or rock.
The data collected from these sensors is then analysed by the designers and engineers to provide valuable insights into the stability and integrity of the heritage structure, and any necessary actions can be taken to protect and preserve it for future generations.
